If you enter a value in a VAT ID field, Scopevisio checks the formal structure when saving, e.g. DE + 9 digits for Germany.
Use the "Check" link, here as an example in GO Customer Tax/Currency, to find out whether the number is actually in use.
The VAT ID is forwarded to the VIES search engine and checked there. Here is an abridged extract from the corresponding website of VIES.
VAT ID check by VIES
You can use the European Union's VAT information exchange system VIES to check online whether a company is registered for cross-border business within the EU.
VIES is a search engine (not a database) owned by the European Commission. It retrieves VAT registration data from the databases of EU countries.
Valid VAT number
If the VAT number is valid, the VAT registration data is displayed/confirmed in VIES.
Invalid VAT number
If the search query shows the invalidity of the VAT number, this means that the VAT number you want to check is not (yet) registered in the searched national database. This can have the following reasons:
The VAT number does not exist.
The VAT number is not authorised for cross-border transactions within the EU.
The registration has not yet been finalised (some EU countries require a separate registration for cross-border transactions within the EU).
Changes are often not immediately recorded in the national databases and therefore cannot be found via VIES. In urgent cases, please contact your local tax authority.
Maintenance work on VIES
Due to maintenance work on the national databases, VIES is sometimes not available. If you receive an error message to this effect, you should try again after a few minutes or later on the same day.
Possible inaccuracies
The European Commission accepts no responsibility for the accuracy of the information available in VIES online as the data is retrieved from national databases which are not under the control of the Commission. The European Commission cannot check, correct, add or delete national VAT registrations.
Results and protocol of the VIES check
In addition to a visual display of the last check result (red X and green tick), you can view a complete overview of the VAT ID checks carried out via the master data in the accounting area.
Qualified check of the VAT ID
A qualified check confirms that a VAT ID belongs to a named company. However, such a check is not carried out and is not part of our offer.
